AIDS FREE
PITTSBURGH
AIDS Free Pittsburgh is a collaborative initiative comprised of government agencies, healthcare institutions, and community-based organizations that strive to support and improve the care of people living with HIV/AIDS, as well as communities most at-risk for HIV. AIDS Free Pittsburgh does not provide services directly, but rather works to raise awareness and build collaboration among community stakeholders. The AIDS Free Pittsburgh initiative was officially launched on December 1, 2015 following similar efforts in San Francisco, New York State and Washington State. Allegheny County is the second county in the United States to take on this challenge.
There are many healthcare providers and community organizations throughout Southwestern PA who provide HIV testing, prevention, treatment, and supportive services for those living with HIV.
AIDS Free Pittsburgh is here to make finding these resources easy for you.
WORKING TOWARDS ZERO.
We have the tools to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic in our community – now is the time to put them to work. We envision a future where everyone has access to essential prevention and treatment services. Where patient-centered care is the norm. Where new HIV cases are rare and an AIDS diagnosis is a thing of the past. We are working to make this future a reality. Are you in?
WHAT IS YOUR STATUS
Getting tested is the only way to know if you have (or don’t have) HIV. Everyone should have a test at least once in their life. Knowing your HIV status gives you control over your own health and can help you to make choices to keep you and your partner(s) healthy.

WHAT IS PrEP?
PrEP, or “Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis,” is a medication that can reduce the chances of getting HIV by about 99%, if used correctly. PrEP can be used by anyone who is HIV-negative. PrEP can help people to feel more in control of their HIV status, help them achieve their sexual health goals, and have pleasurable sex lives.
PEOPLE WITH HIV CAN LIVE LONG, HEALTHY LIVES.
Testing positive for HIV can be a scary time. The good news is that HIV can be treated with medication. HIV medicines can’t cure HIV, but they help people with HIV live long, healthy lives. And someone on effective HIV medication cannot pass the virus on to someone else.
The first thing a person should do after testing positive for HIV is to see a healthcare provider who knows how to treat HIV. The doctor will help to figure out which medications a person with HIV should take. These medications will help a person with HIV stay healthy.
PROVIDER RESOURCES.
Whether you are an existing partner providing care, a service provider looking to connect with clients, or a like-minded organization just getting started, we are all working towards the same goal. We believe in sharing our experiences and tools.
